Your Baby This Week

Your baby this week is about the length of a model train at 22cm long.

Dear Diary

It was World Book Day during the week and parents were encouraged to send their little ones into school dressed as their favourite character from a book they love. You can imagine my delight when Billy chose an avengers book and asked could he wear his hulk costume. I wanted to kiss the face off him.

Parents across the world have been making these stunning and elaborate costumes for weeks now. I've been admiring them on social media and then in the next breath feeling the absolute fear that Billy would want something similar. But no, this little dude has my back. There was zero coercion and he literally just wanted to dress up in the hulk costume.

I am not a very crafty mama but I would have given it my best shot of course. These days I am feeling really tired though so there was an element of getting "off the hook" here and with that comes a strange mixture of relief and guilt.

I can't believe this is the last week of being in the twenties. Next week I am thirty weeks pregnant and that just sounds huge. The countdown will be in single digits soon and that just blows my mind. I don't feel "ready", but I suspect I never really will.

We've picked out a co-sleeper and I can't wait to get it set up. We tried the whole Moses basket thing when Billy was a baby and it became a dumping ground/wardrobe for his clothes. I had never really intended to breastfeed but in the end, it worked out well and co-sleeping made it so much handier.

Co-sleepers seem to be really popular these days. Ours is the Babylo Cozi brand and it attaches to your bed meaning the baby is right beside you but still has their own space. It's adorable. We have also picked out our travel system and it's pretty much identical to the one we had when Billy was a baby. We used it for nearly four years and found it absolutely brilliant so if it isn't broken don't fix it, right?

There is a lot of talk online this week about body confidence and it really has me thinking. I've battled with it throughout this pregnancy. The cyst really threw me (more on that soon) and the idea of gaining weight has been difficult for me to accept. I've stopped feeling guilty about how I feel though. I know my body is doing an incredible job of growing a baby and I am so lucky to be in this position, but you just can't help how you feel you know?

Losing five stone was so transformative for me so gaining weight is scary. I've tried to focus on balance in this pregnancy and so far, so good. I've gained about a stone and four pounds so far and I'm feeling good. When I look in the mirror and see my growing bump it makes me feel so happy. I never had this for my first pregnancy and the visual reminder is a really lovely thing. It kind of stops me in my tracks throughout the day and makes me take a second to consider just how amazing the human body is.

Happy #internationalwomensday 👭 Not my usual kind of photo but on five occasions this week women in my life have helped me to see my body and myself in a more positive light and I am celebrating it today. @sarah_thebetterlifeproject has just given birth to her very own little Billy. Her posts yesterday really struck a chord with me. She's right - how can we not be proud of our baby's very first home and safe haven? @lovelifeandlittleones had a huge affect on me too. While listening to the latest @lidlireland @packed.house #motherboardpodcast I was so touched by her words about pregnancy teaching her to love her body after years of unkind thoughts about it. Another friend who I won't tag has shared a lot of similar thoughts as me over the years. We've both dreamt of losing weight, done it and then wobbled a bit in accepting some of the realities of our pregnant or post partum bodies. She reminded me that we are doing a mammoth task and making an actual human and what a miracle that is. @slim_with_leanne the one who has held my hand throughout this entire journey and continues to do so. We had a great chat about the fact that some weeks life just isn't about a number on the scales. It can be important a lot of the time but just won't be some of the time, and that's ok. And finally, it's no coincidence that my mother's birthday fell on this very week. The ultimate woman and everything I strive to be @maureenm64 I know that life is not all about body image, weight loss and superficial crap but this week all of these women helped me to love and cherish my body and I really needed that. That's just what women do, we get each other. #29weekspregnant

A Partner’s Perspective

I am absolutely in awe of the human body at this stage. Watching my partner grow a baby was mind-blowing the first time around, but seeing her do it twice, all the while being a wonderful mother to our firstborn is awe-inspiring.

She is struggling with her confidence this week – I wish she saw herself the way I do.

Our Midwife’s Advice

Your baby's lungs are now producing a substance called surfactant. It helps the lungs to keep open and inflated once your baby is born and starts breathing for itself. If there are any concerns that your baby is to be delivered early, then you will be given a big dose of steroids, the easiest way to explain why is to say that this causes the lungs to mature more quickly.

If you have escaped getting varicose veins until now, well done! They are extremely common in pregnancy, again down to our old friend the hormones and increased fluid volume (it doubles in pregnancy). If you notice them on your legs, try and avoid standing for extended periods or wear support stockings.

These same 'varicosities 'can also occur in your bum – known as piles or haemorrhoids. Do not suffer in silence, there are treatments that are safe in pregnancy that can reduce the discomfort.

However, if you don't tell your maternity care consultant, midwife or GP then they can't help you. They are extremely common, so please put any embarrassment aside. Making sure you are not constipated by watching your diet and ensuring you have plenty of water on board will also help to make them slightly less uncomfortable. In good news, they generally significantly improve by the 6th week after birth mark (which probably feels like a million miles away!)

Week 29

Our Wellness Tip of the Week

Your hormones may be bringing you on an emotional rollercoaster this week. If so, don't be so hard on yourself! It's out of your control right now and everyone gets in bad moods sometimes.
